Mighty Mint

Mint is my all time favorite herb. I use it in almost all of my smoothies, it's growing all over my house, and I'm a huge sucker for a good mint tea.

Historically, mint was named after a Roman nymph named Menthe, who resurrected by Pluto into the mint plant after his wife, Prosperine killed her. Spearmint was thought to have been brought to the US by pilgrims. Peppermint is a natural hybrid between spearmint and peppermint. One of the oldest European medicinal herbs, peppermint has been used for nausea, breathing problems, headaches, and nervous disorders.
  • Aromatherapy use of peppermint improved cognitive function such as memory, typing, alphabetization, and organization
  • Chewing spearmint gum showed positive effects on cognitive function
  • Peppermint oil taken in capsules relieved some abdominal pain and distention, gas, and bowel movement problems associated with IBS
  • Peppermint fights bacteria, contributing to its antimicrobial effects
  • Topical use of peppermint at the onset of a migraine resolved the headache more quickly than placebo
  • Peppermint used in aromatherapy decreases stress
  • Mint oil has analgesic and antiseptic properties when used topically
