Build Your Energy with Creatine. Maybe?

Creatine is one of the most popular performance enhancement supplements, and it's allowed in professional sports! Why? Because your body makes about half of what it needs all by itself. The other half comes from your food, mostly meat and fish.

Not to point out any specific groups, but young active men love their creatine. But do they know what it does?

Creatine gives your muscles energy after they'be already burned through the ATP, keeping you from burning through your muscles for energy. It can also signal for muscle growth, adding to lean mass. You really need it when you're trying to move quickly and generate a lot of power, such as jumping. Football players, short distance track athletes, and power lifters may need more creatine through supplementation. When used for this purpose creatine may only be effective in those who have a high level of training, and taking a whole bunch for a few days seems to be better for those athletes than taking a lot for a long time. Now, people who already make and take in enough creatine won't need supplementation, but vegetarian body builders may want to keep it in mind.

Outside of bodybuilding and athletic training, supplementation with creatine has also been used to treat Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, muscular dystrophy, and ALS. It may also low cholesterol and triglycerides, contributing to heart health as well as strengthening the heart muscle. More studies need to be done for creatine's effect on arthritis.
