The dried flower
buds of cloves were historically used in Asian medicine for their antiseptic
and local anesthetic properties to treat tooth pain. In the Practice of Physic, written in France
in 1640, the treatment of a toothache with clove oil was first documented. The German
Commission E has approved its use topically, and it is often used to treat toothache, dry socket,
dental anesthetic, mouth and throat anti-inflammatory, and as a counterirritant
for pain. It can be found in many dental hygiene products such as toothpastes.
Toothpaste is one of the products that kills me, because there are so many nasties in commercial toothpastes that I really don't want to be dumping into my system. Check the back of your toothpaste of sodium fluoride, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol and hydrated silica. These are found in rat poisons and antifreeze and may cause cancers, but what's the alternative? Yucky teeth?
